Nothing Tragic… For Once

I was catching up on news this morning when I stumbled upon an article published in 2017 talking about conservation efforts and endangered animals and stuff.

In it, there was a link leading to *gasp* some good news!!

How often is it that you see something online – on a news site – that’s nice? I know I don’t see very many, which is why I was (and am) excited to hear that manatees are no longer classified as endangered, they’ve been bumped down to ‘threatened’.

“Manatees are now considered “threatened,” meaning they are protected under the Endangered Species Act but are no longer considered in imminent danger of extinction throughout their range.”

With the world going downhill around us, every little bit of goodness counts. Even if, like this bit of news, isn’t the ideal, it’s proof that we’re getting there! Little by little but something is working out correctly!!

Having grown up in Florida, I have seen my fair share of manatees but it’s still an experience when we do spot one of those speckled backs peeking through the water. Manatees were normalized like seeing alligators crossing the street was normal; some places let you feed them lettuce while others completely barred the public from interacting with them. It just depends on where you went.

They’d be casually swimming into the marina or beach, roaming around springs, lounging through rivers with babies idling along beside their mothers, and even show up next to the pier on the gulf coast. They’re pretty fascinating animals!

To hear that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services no longer classify them as endangered makes it seem like we can probably – hopefully – allow the chance for another animal (such as polar bears, elephants, and giraffes) to have the same outcome.

We can’t say just yet whether or not the change in status is going to cause problems for manatees (and other animals) in the future, but we can rejoice in the little victory of having saved a portion of the “cows of the sea”.

What’s some good news you have heard of lately?

It doesn’t have to be on the news channel or anything – it could be something nice happening in your life right now – but I wanna know that there are good moments going on amongst the horrible things in this world!
